It was then that I knew with my eye for fine details and passion for helping people that I could be a great dentist.” Now Dr. Dahlkemper and her team at Water’s Edge Dentistry work diligently to provide Charleston-area residents with top-notch dental services, constantly integrating the latest practices and technologies into each treatment. Her advice for running a practice? “Surround yourself with great people, and never stop learning. I’m lucky to have a team of people who work with me and share the same desire and passion to help people and want to constantly continue learning.” Dental education courses, conferences and seminars are a few of the avenues through which the team stays on top of new developments. “Don’t be intimidated by what you don’t know,” she encouraged. Recently, Dr. Dahlkemper’s practice has branched out, adding a state-of-the-art laser that targets issues associated with sleep apnea. People who suffer from conditions that affect breathing and snoring, including obstructive sleep apnea, can find solace in these new nonsurgical treatment methods. Dr. Dahlkemper works closely with area physicians to help patients who cannot wear a CPAP machine find alternative treatments through oral appliance therapy and laser treatments. Now patients can take advantage of a new treatment method at Water’s Edge and experience peaceful sleep once more. “Nightlase is a nonsurgical treatment to improve or eliminate snoring by using gentle laser light energy to rejuvenate the soft tissues in the back of the throat, including the soft palate and uvula,” explained Dr. Dahlkemper. At Water’s Edge, laser therapy is not only used to treat medical conditions but also for holistic cosmetic purposes. “Laser therapy is new and exciting, and we like to offer our patients the latest and greatest,” said Dr. Dahlkemper. Smoothlase™ is a nonsurgical, noninvasive procedure that uses the body’s own natural-healing process to lift, tone and tighten loose skin around the mouth, chin and lips. This is done without disturbing the surface of the skin, all from inside the mouth. “During the Smoothlase™ procedure, the laser uses the energy and power of the electromagnetic spectrum to direct the body to naturally heal and de-age itself,” Dr. Dahlkemper said. Patients of any age and everyone in the family are welcome, as Dr. Dahlkemper and her team are equipped to handle a range of different patients looking for everything from a regular cleaning to more complex treatments. Though her day-to-day work varies greatly between patients and treatments, Dr. Dahlkemper loves her career. “It’s very rewarding when I’m able to relieve patients’ TMJ pain with nonsurgical therapy, help them to be healthier and breathe better through oral appliances and sleep therapy and rebuild beautiful smiles,” she reflected. “I’m lucky that I come to work every day to a job I love, surrounded by a great team and wonderful patients.” BY SAMANTHA CONNORS DR.
