Candice Vinson was in high school when she discovered that her calling was a helping profession. “Both of my parents had full-mouth smile makeovers that changed their lives,” Dr. Vinson said. “I saw how their dental treatment not only restored their function but had an incredibly profound emotional impact on their lives, restoring their confidence and ability to feel proud when they smiled.” Dr. Vinson attended the College of Charleston for her undergraduate degree before moving on to the Medical University of South Carolina College of Dental Medicine, where she developed an interest in prosthodontics. “The more and more I learned, the more I wanted to know, and becoming a prosthodontist would give me a deeper understanding and greater skills for planning and restoring my patients’ smiles and oral health,” she said. While completing her residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Dr. Vinson began the process of opening her own practice. “My family members are all entrepreneurs, so I’ve grown up surrounded by that drive, and I knew I just had to go for it and become a practice owner,” she explained. “I’ve had so much support after opening from the surrounding community and surrounding dental professionals, and I feel very blessed and excited to be open and a part of the Mount Pleasant community.” Mount Pleasant has always had a special place in Dr. Vinson’s heart since she went to the College of Charleston, and, after being away for her residency, she was ready to come back to the Lowcountry to open her practice and bring her specialty to the area. “So many new families are living in this area now, and it just seemed like there was a need for my specialty here,” said Dr. Vinson. “There is already a great community of dentists and other dental specialists, and my specialty is one that can only add to the comprehensive care that people in the area need.” With a prosthodontist in town, residents now have access to full-mouth comprehensive care, which includes crowns, veneers, bridges, implants and even removable prostheses such as partials and dentures. And with such extensive training, Dr. Vinson offers clients another treatment called hybrid prostheses, which involves restoring missing or failing teeth with multiple implants that support a brand-new arch of teeth, according to Dr. Vinson. As a business owner, Dr. Vinson is motivated by her desire to impact people’s lives in a positive way by giving her patients their smiles back. “Every day I try to do my very best for my patients, and it motivates me to continue learning so I can give my patients my best,” she said. “I feel so blessed to be able to live out my dream of owning my own business, and I feel extra blessed that I was able to do it early in my career. I have had tremendous support from my family, and I lean heavily on God to lead me in the right direction.” BY ALLI STEINKE DR.
